A Groundscape as a catalyst for new types of interaction in the context of the Parisian urban fabric

JMA-FR TRAVAIL DE MASTER SA 2023-2024

By acknowledging the line that separates what is above from what is below ground, the term Groundscape points to the last layer that makes up our cities and that has yet to be explored. Acknowledging the potential of subterranean architecture is the first step towards understanding this layer as an urban membrane that separates the lower and upper levels. The thickness that forms the slab of the Esplanade des Invalides in the 7th arrondissement of Paris is proposed as a site for investigation. The site, which is reminiscent of the expansion of the Parisian railway network, underwent a major transformation at the beginning of the 20th century when a new steel substructure was built to cover the tracks leading to the newly built Gare des Invalides.

Today, the remaining connection to the urban transport system justifies its activation both during the day and at night. The slab that covers the tracks and raises the esplanade, is supported by a grid of cast iron columns. The project is about discovering the potential of what already exists. The intention to make it a public space, open to everyone in the city, while at the same time intertwining the display of art with other activities embedded in the city, provokes new forms of interaction, consisting of changing uses between day and night, new opportunities for social interaction, and the possibility of experiencing art in our everyday lives.
