Seminar S1 JMA-BE

Cinematic Space – Architectural Space

Film still from « Kafka », directed by Steven Soderbergh, 1991.

Content

The theory seminar deals with architectural as well as filmic space. The focus is on the scenographic potential of architecture. Cinematic spaces are created in front of the camera, with the help of the camera, as well as behind the camera (with the help of film editing etc.). During the seminar, creative strategies will be analysed which create spatial atmospheres on all three levels, and to what extent these can also serve to create architectural spatial atmospheres.

teaching aims

Students will analyse movement in space, time and action based on Kafka’s novel « The Trial » with the help of collages, storyboards and scene models. They will also work in teams to analyse a scene in more detail and design an architectural setting for it, filming and editing a film sequence with the help of the scene model. Theoretical texts on the topic as well as the reading of Kafka’s novel « The Trial » will be discussed in an assignment before the start of the seminar and worked on individually by each student. During the seminar week there will be three film screenings in Biel / Bienne in the evening.
